Old Shed at GeehiGeehi Hut |
Day 2: Next morning, thought we’d take out Colin (our nickname for the Colorado) for some 4wd action and check out the huts that were built by the land owners years ago that can be used by anyone today ( mainly for use of the fireplace or eating in the dry). We crossed a few water crossings and tackled a few steep slopes, kids enjoyed it that much they got through three levels of donkey kong on their Gameboys. The afternoon was more 4wd action. Al shat herself on a couple of occasions as Housie thought he was king shit getting through a couple of tough sections. Highlight for this trip was coming across 2 brumbies standing in a creek crossing and 4 wild dogs that had been caught and hung by their hind legs off a sign.
Day 3: Off to climb Kosiouscko , got to Thredbo and the walk from the carpark to the chairlifts was approx 800mtrs, by the 100mtr point Charli told us her feet hurt because her shoes were too small and Declan wanted a piggy back by 200mtrs. Wouldn’t be climbing Kosi today. Ok so we compromised with the kids that we would only go to the lookout which was a 4km round trip. 45 stops due to sore feet, legs, stomach, ears, nose, eyes, I’m hungry, I’m thirsty, we got to the look out!! Yeeehaaa!! Not sure what was in the air at that lookout, but far out the kids were full of energy on the way back with running and jumping off rocks, wow a full on miracle!
Arrived back to camp and some inconsiderate person had set up right next to us, luckily it was Housie’s cousin Andrew and Larelle who were on their 1 month adventure. Kids enjoyed playing with their cousins. Pushie riding and swimming in the cold river was choice of activities.
Day 4 : We set off to Glenrowan the site where the infamous Ned Kelly was captured. Over the next couple of days we used this place as a base to also check out Bright and Housie’s old stomping ground of Wangarratta.
The kids loved Bright with the river and playground. The afternoon was spent at Beechworth going through the court house that Ned Kelly was tried, a brief visit to Beechworth Gaol where most of the Kelly family spent time and where Carl Williams also spent time there before the place shut in 2004. We celebrated New Years at Wangarratta, firstly Housie bored the kids by showing them where he used to live and then Al, with all the girls he used to get. Then it was off to the park for some fireworks. A great display with the highlight being the crowd showered by debris (some still alight).
Day 5 : We walked through the town of Glenrowan (a leisurely 500mtr walk) to see all the Ned Kelly attractions that were on offer. The Ned Kelly animation theatre was sold to us by the owner as the best attraction Australia has seen with over 12 million dollars spent on it. Wow we were shocked, not by how good the show was, but how much they had spent and what was actually on show ( a little disappointing). Then we had a family Outlaw portrait taken in Ned Kelly theme. Declan was in his element holding guns and aiming at anyone that he could pretending to shoot them. That arvo it was back to Bright for the kids to use up some energy at the playground and the river.
Day 6: We packed up from Glenrowan and headed off to Mansfield, this place would be base camp for a couple of 4wd trips Housie was looking forward to. First stop was to the auto electrician, as the battery wasn't holding it's charge and to have the issue with the right blinker being permantly alight. The auto electrician fixed the battery issue but the blinker would need the trailer to nearly be rewired. ( this will be fixed later). We found a camp spot about 20kms out of Mansfield at Sheepyard flat, nice spot right on the Howqua river.
Day 7: Some 4wd driving on the way to Craigs Hut (the one used in the Man from Snowy River). Al was freaked at the climbs and descents that Housie was taking them on to get there, holding on for dear life and pretending to read the map so she didn't have to look out the windscreen. Charli was on her Ipod and Declan started watching a movie, Housie was the only one enjoying the action. Al then asked Declan if he wanted to sit up the front to see the action, he couldn't get in there fast enough. It was pretty cold up there and slight rain so the view wasn't as good as we had wished, but was still a great place to visit.
